SUP-Surfing Hurricane Danielle Groundswell

Michael's Big-Wave Takeoff

Last Sunday, the stars aligned. An offshore hurricane, full moon, and high pressure bringing warm, off-shore winds and sunny skies. Hurricane Danielle sent us shoulder to well overhead groundswell as it passed 1000 miles to our southeast. My cameras were charged and ready as I grabbed ride after glorious ride with Peter, Jon, Michael, and Steve in the biggest waves on Sunday. You'll find photos in this Hurricane Danielle Groundswell photoset, as well as shots from previous weeks in the Summer of SUP - 2010 photoset; handheld & paddlecam video from the weekend is compiled in this youtube clip:

Thanks for the comments guys, I had a blast capturing these images. My fingers are crossed for more action this weekend.

Bill, good luck with Earl on the OBX this week - Swellinfo has triple overhead waves coming your way!!

That was phenomenal how you took that hit, and still kept the camera rolling!!!!

haha, hey Brendon, it makes for good wipeout footage, but the purpose is more to keep the camera away from the force of the wave. I noticed the GoPro case fogging up after big hits, so I do my best to keep it airborne.

See you in a few weeks at Napeague!

Hey great blog, sick stuff. Paddle cam is amazing. What is that board you are riding Jeff? Crest/logo looks like Starboard, but the color scheme looks like JP Australia. Is there a story there?

Hi Oldguy, thank you for your comments. I'm riding a 2008 Starboard Ultimate 11'2". It's superfast thanks to its superglide, works great on waves from 7" to 7'+, and responds well with a paddle or a windsurf sail.
